Borodino · 1812

The general engagement of the Patriotic War of 1812. After Smolensk Kutuzov took command and offered battle at Borodino to wear down the Grande Armée before Moscow. Napoleon held the field but did not destroy the Russian army; strategically the road to Moscow opened at enormous cost, and the campaign continued toward the catastrophe of the retreat.
