After the occupation of Moscow Napoleon sought the southern road through Kaluga — a rich region and a shorter line of supply. At Maloyaroslavets (24 October) Kutuzov blocked that route; the French took the town but failed to break through. The Emperor turned the army north onto the already devastated Smolensk road — the catastrophic retreat began.
