Ulm · 1805

The first major blow of the War of the Third Coalition in southern Germany. Austria had placed its main army on the Danube, hoping to join the Russians; Napoleon outmanoeuvred it with the Grande Armée and closed the ring at Ulm. Mack's capitulation destroyed the Austrian field army before Austerlitz and shifted the war into Moravia.
