Vitoria · 1813

The end of French rule in northern Spain. In the spring of 1813 Wellington drove the army of King Joseph Bonaparte and Marshal Jourdan toward Biscay; on 21 June the allies struck in three columns at Vitoria. The French abandoned guns and a vast baggage train and retreated through the Pyrenees — the last great defeat of Napoleonic Spain before the fall of Bayonne.
